The premier golfing event, the New Zealand open is hosted at The Hills Golf Course in Arrowtown, Central Otago, in the South Island.

Queenstown is placed on the shores of the glaciated lake of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkable Ranges which flanks one side of the lake provides the background.

The 4.3 million poulation of New Zealand touts having in excess of 300 golf clubs, officially registered with Golf New Zealand. Despite this there is also a number of 9 and 18 hole courses owned or attached to some of the wonderful hotels situated in idyllic locations around New Zealand.

The foothills of Mt Ruapehu, the largest mountain in the North Island, host one such course.

A little further down the road towards the countries capital city, Wellington, is the Rangatira Golf Club not often visited by tourists, due to its isolation to high quality accommodation.

The Rangatira course has delightful views overlooking the Rangitiki gorge. Over millions of years the Rangitiki River has carved out the limestone gorge.

The high level of standard that the course presents is due to the way in which it is maintained by the green staff. Split into 3 levels of six holes each making its way down the hillside towards the Rangitiki River. The 4 person electric cable car takes you back up to the clubhouse after completeing the 18th hole. All this for only $25 NZ green fee.

Lake Taupo is south of Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand

New Zealands largest Lake is 629 square kilometers, Lake Taupo.

A volcanic crater, which last erupted two thousand years ago. Within the last 2,000, it is thought to have been one of the biggest eruptions in the world. A darkening of the skies and a red glow at night in the southern skies was recorded by the ancient Romans and Chinese and thought to be that of Lake Taupo.

Only a few minutes from the township of Taupo, stands the Wairakei International Golf Course, rated by the prestigious US Golf Digest magazine, to be in the top 100 courses in the world outside of the USA in 2005.

Many of New Zealand’s native trees and plants, grace the fairways and greens. To uphold the native bird life and trees, the course is totally encompassed with a predator exclusion fence

The beginning place of New Zealand’s recent history is towards the top of the North Island is an area called the Bay of Islands. Looking across the waters of the Bay of Island and the township of Russell, is the back drop to the delightful Waitangi Golf Course.

Waitangi is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the indigenous people of the land, the Maori, and the settlers, the British.

The undulating landscape and native bush surround the fairways and greens of the front nine holes. The spectacular views. of the back nineĀ  holes contrast that of the front. Native birds like the Tui, Fantail, Australasian Harrier Hawk or a family of Canadian Quails are not out of the ordinary golf partners.

All of the courses in New Zealand are run by amicable, helpful ‘Kiwis’ (Nickname for New Zealanders), most offering golf club and trolley or cart hire and bar & restaurant facilities for refreshments after the game.
